WBPSC Clerkship: Part-1 Scoring Strategy (English 30 + Math 30) & Part-2 Descriptive Blueprint

Clerkship selection is a two-tier battle: Part 1 objective test filters out 90% of applicants, while Part 2 conventional descriptive writing determines your cadre allotment and final merit.

Understanding the WBPSC Clerkship Scheme

The WBPSC Clerkship examination is one of the largest recruitment drives conducted by the Public Service Commission, West Bengal. To secure an appointment in the Secretariat, Directorates, or District Offices, you must understand both tiers:

  • Part 1 (Objective Type - 100 Marks, 90 Minutes):

    • English: 30 Marks
    • General Studies: 40 Marks
    • Arithmetic: 30 Marks
  • Part 2 (Conventional Written Test - 100 Marks, 60 Minutes):

    • Group A (English): 50 Marks (Drafting a report, Summary/Precis writing, Translation from Bengali to English)
    • Group B (Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali): 50 Marks (প্রতিবেদন রচনা, সারাংশ লিখন, English to Bengali বঙ্গানুবাদ)
  • Computer Operation & Typing Test: Qualifying in nature (20 wpm in English or 10 wpm in Bengali).

Part 1: How to Score 80+ to Guarantee Part 2 Qualification

Because lakhs of candidates sit for Clerkship, the Part 1 cutoff regularly reaches 65–75 for General candidates.

English (30 Marks) - The Deciding Factor

Many West Bengal rural candidates fear English. However, WBPSC Clerkship English is predictable and vocabulary-driven:

  • Prepositions & Phrasal Verbs (5-7 Marks): Focus on standard sets like abide by, consist of, look into, bring up.

  • Idioms & Phrases (4-5 Marks): High-frequency idioms like a feather in one's cap, at the eleventh hour.

  • Synonyms & Antonyms (6-8 Marks): Repeated previous year SSC and PSC vocabulary.

  • Voice Change & Narration Change (3-4 Marks): Standard textbook grammatical transformations.

  • Sentence Correction & Fillers (4-6 Marks): Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency.

Arithmetic (30 Marks)

Purely WBBSE Madhyamik standard. Focus heavily on LCM/HCF, Ratio, Percentage, Profit & Loss, Simple Interest, and Average.

Part 2: Descriptive Bengali & English Preparation

Do NOT wait for the Part 1 result to begin Part 2 preparation. There is usually only a short window between the result announcement and the descriptive exam.

Group B: Bengali (50 Marks)

  1. প্রতিবেদন রচনা (Report Writing - 20 Marks):

    • Structure: শিরোনাম (Catchy Title) $\to$ বিশেষ সংবাদদাতা / নিজস্ব সংবাদদাতা $\to$ স্থান ও তারিখ $\to$ ৩টি অনুচ্ছেদে মূল তথ্য, প্রভাব ও প্রশাসনের ভূমিকা।
    • Maintain objective, journalistic tone. Avoid personal opinions ("আমি মনে করি").
  2. সারাংশ লিখন (Precis/Summary - 15 Marks):

    • Condense the original passage to approximately one-third ($1/3$) length.
    • Do NOT quote direct lines from the passage. Express the core theme in your own words.
  3. বঙ্গানুবাদ (Translation - 15 Marks):

    • Never do word-for-word translation (আক্ষরিক অনুবাদ).
    • Ensure grammatical fluency and natural idiomatic flow (ভাবানুবাদ).
