WBCS Prelims 8-Pillar Framework (25 Marks Each)

The West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) Preliminary examination features a beautifully symmetrical 200-mark format divided across 8 subjects, each carrying exactly 25 marks:

  1. English Composition (25 Marks)

  2. General Science (25 Marks)

  3. Current Events of National & International Importance (25 Marks)

  4. History of India (Ancient & Medieval) (25 Marks)

  5. Indian National Movement (INM) (25 Marks)

  6. Geography of India with Special Reference to West Bengal (25 Marks)

  7. Indian Polity and Economy (25 Marks)

  8. General Mental Ability (25 Marks)

Total: 200 Questions, 200 Marks, 150 Minutes (2.5 Hours). Negative marking: 0.33 (1/3rd).

The "Big 75": Why History & Geography Make or Break Your Prelims

Notice that Indian History + Indian National Movement totals 50 Marks (25% of the entire paper). Combined with Geography (25 Marks), these two subjects control 75 out of 200 marks.

1. Indian National Movement (25 Marks) - Highest ROI

  • 1857 Revolt causes and leaders.

  • Foundation of Indian National Congress (1885), Moderate vs Extremist phase, Surat Split (1907).

  • Partition of Bengal (1905) and Swadeshi Movement (critical for Bengal exams).

  • Gandhian Era: Non-Cooperation (1920), Civil Disobedience (1930), Quit India (1942).

  • Revolutionary nationalism in Bengal: Anushilan Samiti, Jugantar, Surya Sen and Chittagong Armoury Raid.

  • Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army (INA).

2. West Bengal Geography (12-15 Questions out of 25)

National UPSC books barely touch West Bengal geography. For WBCS, you must know:

  • Physiographic Divisions: Northern mountainous terrain (Darjeeling, Kalimpong), Terai and Dooars, Western plateau (Purulia, Bankura), Rarh plain, and Sundarban mangrove delta.

  • River Systems: Bhagirathi-Hooghly, North Bengal rivers (Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka, Mahananda), Western plateau rivers (Damodar, Mayurakshi, Subarnarekha).

  • Districts & Demographics: 23 districts, bordering states (Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, Assam) and neighboring countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal).

The 130+ Safe Score Blueprint

Historically, the WBCS Prelims cutoff ranges between 115 and 132 for UR candidates depending on paper difficulty. Your minimum target sheet should look like:

  • General Mental Ability (Reasoning & Math): 20 / 25
