The Anatomy of Category-2 Questions in WB JECA
Category-2 is the ultimate differentiator between an average candidate and a Top-10 ranker. With 20 questions carrying 2 marks each, Category-2 accounts for 40 marks (33.3% of the total exam weightage).
Unlike standard MCQs, Category-2 questions can have one, two, three, or all four options correct.
The Official Partial Marking Formula
According to the official WBJEEB examination guidelines:
Full Marks (+2.0): Awarded ONLY if all correct options are selected and NO incorrect option is selected.
Zero Marks (0.0): Awarded if ANY incorrect option is selected, even if all correct options are also selected!
Partial Marks: If some (but not all) correct options are selected, and no incorrect option is selected, marks are awarded by the formula:
$$\text{Marks Awarded} = 2 \times \frac{\text{Number of correct options marked}}{\text{Total number of correct options in the question}}$$
Example Scenarios
Assume for a question, the correct answer options are (A, B, C). Here is what happens for various candidate responses:
| Candidate Selection | Outcome | Marks Awarded | Explanation |
|:---|:---:|:---:|:---|
| A, B, C | Full Correct | +2.0 Marks | All 3 correct options chosen |
| A, B | Partial Correct | +1.33 Marks | $2 \times (2/3) = 1.33$ |
| A | Partial Correct | +0.67 Marks | $2 \times (1/3) = 0.67$ |
| A, B, D | Invalid Option Marked | 0.0 Marks | Option D is wrong. Instant forfeiture! |
| D | Solely Wrong Option | 0.0 Marks | Wrong option marked, but NO negative deduction |
The Golden Rule: "Never Guess an Unsure Option in Category-2"
Notice the critical distinction:
In Category-1: An incorrect guess loses you 0.25 marks.
In Category-2: Adding an unsure incorrect option to two correct options costs you 1.33 earned marks!
Rule of Thumb for Category-2: If you are 100% confident about Option A and Option B, but only 50% sure about Option C, MARK ONLY A AND B! Securing guaranteed +1.33 marks is immensely superior to gambling for +2.0 and risking 0.0 marks.
